What are Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are one of the main nutritional components in the food we consume on daily basis. Carbs are very important for producing energy for our bodies. Carbohydrates are turned into glucose or so called blood sugar which is turned into energy to power our muscle groups, provide fuel for our central nervous system and prevents protein being used as energy to power our bodies.

Carbohydrates are divided into two groups: Simple and Complex Carbohydrates.

Simple carbohydrates also can be called simple sugars and have a smaller structure system. Simple carbohydrates or simple sugars can be found in junk food like cake, candy, soda, energy drinks and other products filled with refined sugar, which will have very little nutritional benefit to your body. The energy boost provided by simple carbohydrates will be pretty much instant, but shortly lived.

Complex carbohydrates foods are full of vitamins, starch and fiber and have a much larger structure then simple carbs. Complex carbs are contained by foods like pasta, whole grains, vegetables, fruit also contain complex carbs, beans, lentils and many more. Complex carbohydrates take much longer time to digest and absorb into your body. This causes a slow and steady release of energy which will leave you feeling vitalised through the day.

Both carbohydrates are used to fuel our bodies with energy through the day. All you need to decide is what sort of energy are you looking for, a nice and steady release through the day or a quick power boost which will leave you feeling tired and drowsy after?
